In December 2020, ELFA Preschool @ Serangoon and ELFA Chinese Preschool @ Pandan Valley jointly organised a fun and exciting talk titled “Plants Around Us.” In preparation for the session, children and parents were each given a planting kit for some hands-on activity. Each starter kit set contains a pot, a packet of soil and some Kangkong seeds.

We were honoured to have our guest speaker, Ms Josephine Tan, a volunteer from National Parks (NParks) joining us for the talk. Ms Tan has vast experience in gardening, and she helps to care for the nurseries in Hougang and Punggol. The talk started with a brief introduction to some common plants around us. It allowed the children and their parents to understand the different types of plants that grow on soil and water. Ms Tan further explained the life cycle of a plant, what plants need to thrive on, and the function and importance of the different parts of a plant.

Sharing on the planting kit and ensuring our participants have it with them for the workshop.

Listening and waiting for the planting activity.

As the children understand better how to care for their plants, they have a chance at potting their plants using the items in their planting kit. Together with their parents, the children started sowing their Kangkong seeds. The children were enthusiastic and were actively engaged in the planting activity. The activity was a success as the children and parents bonded over the activity.

Excitement seen on Ernest’s face as the talk is about to start.

Isabelle and daddy worked together as they carefully placed the Kangkong seeds in the soil.

Giving the Kangkong seeds a little water to help it grow!

All smiles as the children and parents smile for the successful planting activity.
