Chinese Lunar New Year, also called Spring Festival (春节), has more than 4,000 years of history and is the most important annual festival for the Chinese. The celebration last for 15 days from the first day to the fifteenth day of the Lunar calendar. The fifteenth day of the Lunar month is also known as Yuan Xiao (元宵).
ELFA celebrated Yuan Xiao with the enthusiastic participation of more than 50 teachers, parents and children. The children explored many aspects of Chinese culture, from food to games. Our mini explorers had fun performing the lion dance ,Wu Shi (舞狮) for our guests.
With ingredients brought by the parents, we made customary dessert Tang Yuan (汤圆), a symbolic dish representing sweet reunion. We also played traditional games such as solving lantern riddles, Cai Deng Mi (猜灯谜). During the game, parents participated actively and were eager to solve the riddles even taking the effort to search online for the answers. The main purpose for the celebration is for parents and children to enjoy the festival through the experience of traditional food and games.
Chinese New Year celebration is never complete without the tossing of Yusheng (捞鱼生). The tossing of Yusheng marks the end of the festival, bringing forth blessings for a prosperous and good year ahead.
