Children hear, use, and interact in both English and Chinese throughout the day — language becomes something they live, not memorise.
ELFA’s curriculum integrates language across all learning areas. Particularly through Chinese Speech and Drama, the programme is conducted in Mandarin to foster creativity while nurturing a strong appreciation for the language. The programme advocates clear articulation in Mandarin through verbal and bodily expressions.
ELFA also promotes strong foundation in Mathematics through the unique ELFA Higher-Order-Thinking Maths. Taught bilingually, the programme helps children grasp concepts while becoming familiar with both languages.
Rather than switching languages “on and off,” children grow comfortable using both naturally and confidently.

ELFA’s Chinese Story-Based Curriculum adopts a thematic, story-based approach, with each week built around a carefully selected picture book and related learning activities. It is further enriched by signature components such as traditional festivals and local cultures, emotions and character education and classical Chinese poetry. The curriculum aims to cultivate children’s interest in and confidence in learning and using the Chinese language, while fostering an appreciation of Singapore’s multicultural heritage and nurturing an understanding of Chinese traditional virtues and values, thereby laying a strong foundation for children’s future bilingual development and intercultural competence.
A Progressive Bilingual Journey at ELFA
Infant (2-18 months)
Infants and Toddlers enjoy a rich bilingual environment with daily songs, stories and meaningful conversations. Thoughtfully planned activities such as art and craft, physical movement and intentional play interactions also enrich early language skills. This early exposure to both English and Chinese builds a strong foundation while nurturing a lasting interest and love for both languages.
Pre-Nursery 1 and 2 (18 months-3 years old)
Children are immersed in language through stories, songs, movement, picture talk, and conversations, supported by gestures and visual cues. Language exposure at this age is 60% in Chinese Literature and 40% in English Literature, allowing children more time to use Mandarin at a younger age. This builds a familiar association with the language from a tender age, reducing resistance to using it as they grow.
Nursery (4 years old)
Children expand vocabulary and comprehension while strengthening listening and speaking through meaningful interactions, such as daily conversations, purposeful play, picture talk, and dramatisation of stories. At this age, they also start word recognition through interactive lessons. Simple character pre-writing will also be introduced to the older children.
Kindergarten 1 and 2 (5-6 years old)
Children explore picture talk, storytelling, dramatisation of stories, sentence construction, shared reading, poetry, and early writing. Mini Project Learning in Chinese encourages collaboration, creativity, and communication. At this stage, learning experiences may include Chinese character recognition, adapting rhymes or song lyrics, and expressing their ideas through their own drawings and writing, including adding simple captions or sentences to their work.
Confidence That Goes Beyond Language
