Earth Day on 22 April 2019 presented another opportunity for ELFA Preschool @ Serangoon to raise more awareness about the threats to the wellbeing of our beloved Earth.

The day was marked with teachers explaining how a clean and healthy Earth can help to sustain clean air and water, as well as the production of food and other necessities, for our survival. They shared stories on indiscriminate disposal of waste, especially non-recyclable materials, and the damage caused to the environment by ignorance and abuse, such as mindless burning of forests for cultivation. The children were reminded about the dos and don’ts to protect the environment and what they and their families could do to help the Earth.

Look at me watering the plants!

Children were also engaged in various activities organised for them. The lower age ones participated in watering the plants in the garden as well as understanding the importance of recycling and reusing waste materials. For the older age children, the sand pit at the centre was made to look like a waste-polluted beach for them to do a clean-up. They also took part in some gardening activities to beautify the centre environment.

Specially decorated boxes were made for the children to dispose of unwanted waste

By the end of the day, the children had a better appreciation of how a clean, beautiful and vibrant Earth can make life better for everyone.
